About the Alumni Council

Purpose of the Alumni Council

The Faculty's first Alumni Council was established in 2010. The role of the Alumni Council is to foster networks between alumni and to support the work of the Dean, the Business and Economics Board, and the Advancement Unit. Specifically, the Council will assist the Faculty to:

Structure and Governance

The Alumni Council operates as an arm of the Business and Economics Board. Mr Chris Leptos AM, member of the B&E Board, was appointed by the Dean and the B&E Board Chairman, Dr Peter Yates, as interim Chairman of the Alumni Council to oversee the planning of the steering committee and the establishment of the inaugural Alumni Council throughout 2010.

The inaugural Chair or Co-Chairs of the Alumni Council, who are also appointed by the Dean and Dr Yates, will serve as a member/s of the B&E Board. There are nine appointed members of the Council, three of whom are international alumni. An additional three members are elected to the Council by online ballot open to all Business and Economics alumni.

FAQs

What is BEA@M?
BEA@M stands for Business and Economics Alumni @ Melbourne and is the name of the Faculty’s alumni community of more than 37,000 alumni worldwide. All graduates of the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Graduate School of Business and Economics are automatically lifelong members of BEA@M and there are no fees to pay.

Is UMCAS still alive?
UMCAS, or the University of Melbourne Commerce Alumni Society, was a society established in 1990 for BCom graduates of the Faculty. UMCAS was launched on 14 November 1990 by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Peter Lloyd, at a party attended by over 200 guests. UMCAS originally charged membership fees but these were later abolished, allowing free membership to all Faculty alumni. UMCAS was incorporated into BEA@M in 2010.

How do I connect with other members of BEA@M?
By attending alumni events or getting involved in programs such as career mentoring, you will have the opportunity to meet people all around the world who have shared the same Melbourne experience as you. What is the role of the Business and Economics Alumni Council?
The Alumni Council has been created as an organ of the Business and Economics Board to promote the beneficial relationship between the Faculty of Business and Economics, its alumni and other members of the academic and the professional world and the wider community. The Alumni Council will act as the governing body of the Faculty's alumni community, BEA@M.  

How will the Alumni Council support and build the relationship between BEA@M and the Faculty?
As representatives of BEA@M, the members of the Alumni Council will be seeking input from alumni into building the alumni relations program further and engaging alumni in the intellectual life of the Faculty. Alumni Council members will serve a term of two years, during which time Council priorities will be focused around the following work-streams:
