The end of semester one has been celebrated by both staff and students - June 25th saw the return of 'A Night of A Thousand Stars', a party to farewell our mid-year BCom graduates.

The Melbourne GSM graduation dinner is coming up nextweek at the Arts Centre and the 2009 Teaching and Research Awards were held last week in recognition of the achievements of our academic staff.

The history of economics in the University of Melbourne is documented in the recently launched book Balanced Growth. The book is edited by former Dean of the Faculty Ross Williams and has contributions from Jeff Borland, Robert Dixon, Peter Drake, John Freebairn, Marjorie Harper, Marjorie Harper, Joe Isaac, Peter Lloyd and Neville Norman. The Department of Economics was formally established only in 1944 but the book details the history of the faculty from its inception in 1925.

The latest Annual Statistical Report of the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey, Families, Incomes and Jobs, Volume 4, was released in June by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research.
The HILDA Survey, Australia’s only large-scale nationally representative longitudinal household panel survey, interviews the same households and individuals each year. This enables the collection of evidence-based data on how peoples’ lives are changing over time, with a focus on issues relating to families, income, employment and well-being.

Mark_Wooden Professor Mark Wooden was appointed as a Professorial Fellow with the Melbourne Institute in March 2000. He is Deputy Director of the Institute, which is increasingly regarded as Australia’s leading applied economic and social research institute, and is currently the Director of the HILDA Project, Australia's first large-scale household panel survey.
